Language

Cover of "How We Find Ouselves: Identity Development and Two-Spirt People"leLanguage is important when searching for information about people from gender and sexual minorities and the cultural and social forces that affect their lives. The words people use to describe themselves vary over time and across cultures; mainstream culture uses different language than that used by LGBTQIA2S+ insiders. For example:

  • transgender, trans, gender, gender Identity, gender minorities, nonbinary gender, two-spirit, gender expression, transsexual, queer, gender variant, gender nonconforming
  • gay, lesbian, bisexual, same-sex, queer, sexual minorities, pansexual, two-spirit, sexual orientation, homosexuality, heterosexuality, homophile
  • Pronoun Use
