This oral history interview was conducted to provide information on the Duluth Board of Trade archival collection (S2209); H. Watson Wilson was the final secretary of the Board of Trade in Duluth, Minnesota at the time of its dissolution in 1972. In the interview H. Watson Wilson provided explanations of the various documents in the collection, focusing on their use and significance to the functioning of the Board. He also described the relationships among the various bureaus of the Board of Trade, such as the Sampling Bureau and the Board of Arbitration, to the Board itself.

The interviews in this project document the history of Duluth, Minnesota area businesses and labor unions. Narrators comment, where appropriate, on the founding and growth of various businesses or labor organizations, the formation of corporate policies, labor-management relations, urban renewal, union philosophy and strategy, government regulation, binding arbitration, and the relationship of business and labor to political and civic affairs. Barbara Sommer, Northeast Minnesota Historical Center, University of Minnesota, Duluth, conducted the interviews in 1980-1981.

In 1978 and 1979 historian Barbara Sommer interviewed fifteen women form the Duluth, Minnesota area who were involved in politics as elected officials or activists. In the interviews the women discussed their reasons for entering politics, their involvements past and present, and their own and their families' reactions to their involvement in politics.

The collection consists of three audio recordings of interviews with Albertine Johnson. The interviewer was her son, Rudy Johnson. Interviews took place on September 7, 1977 and May 7, 1978.

In 1979 historian Barbara Sommer interviewed nine Duluth, Minnesota area women who worked in business or the professions. The women discussed their reasons for entering the various professions they represent, including doctor, lawyer, arts administrator, library director, banker, small business owner and business employees. They also described their reasons for entering their field, their reactions to it, the reactions of colleagues and commented generally on the impact their careers have had on their families.

In 1978 and 1979 historian Barbara Sommer interviewed residents of the Fond du Lac Reservation in Minnesota. The participants discussed and defined changes in the boundary of the Fond du Lac Reservation, MN. They also identified some changes in land use that occurred on the reservation and identified historic sites. The interviews include some spoken Ojibwe words and place names.

The collection consists of audiocassette recordings of four individuals discussing their lives and businesses in Duluth, Minnesota. The discussions were recorded in 1975.

The collection consists of two audio recordings of interviews with Mike Shabaiash. The interviews took place on October 10 and 12, 1979 and were conducted as a part of the Historic Resources Inventory of the Fond du Lac Reservation. An index to this interview is available. In the interview Mike Shabaiash discussed location and use of traditional villages, cemeteries, mounds, wild rice, and logging on the Fond du Lac Reservation in Carlton and St. Louis Counties, Minnesota.

The collection consists of two audio recordings of an interview with Frank Whitebird. The interview took place on May 1, 1980 and was conducted as a part of the Historic Resources Inventory of the Fond du Lac Reservation. An index to this interview is available. In the intervew Frank Whitebird discussed the location of mounds, fishing camps and flint pits; fishing; names and location of villages, schools, missions, latter cemeteries, and logging railroads.

This collection includes an oral history project conducted in 2006-2007 of interviews with Arlene Lehto, John Pegors, Arnold Overby, LeRoger Lind, Walter Sve, Grant Merritt, Judge Miles Lord, and Gary Glass. There is a text summary for each recording and a transcript of the Arlene Lehto interview.

The collection consists of one audiocassette, made in Duluth, Minnesota, in 1970 with Mr. Gerard Spencer and Mr. D. C. Vaughn present. The Reminiscences of Meda St. Pierre include the topics: work as trombone player at theaters, bands, etc; well known performers who came to Duluth; Duluth Boat Club rowing crew; Duluth News-Tribune; bow hunting; local photographers and the Gaylord negatives; White City on Park Point; President Hayes; G.G. Hartley; and the Duluth Symphony Orchestra.

The collection consists of three interviews on five cassette tapes and corresponding transcriptions: Gordy and Magda Hendrickson, March 30, 1981, have always lived in Larsmont; a second interview with Gordy and Magda Hendrickson on April 23, 1981; Ted Whalberg spoke June 3, 1981 about the history of his family of Larsmont. The speakers discuss houses, jobs, schools, marriage, and how life has changed. The 90-minute tapes are clear and audible. The narrators answer the questions of "Bill" who is Raymond W. Hermanson.

This collection includes include 1996 recordings and transcriptions of oral history interviews with attendees at the annual reunion luncheon.

The collection consists of 2 interviews of Evert Haglund on two cassettes. The first interview on 2/5/1991 is 25 minutes long and focuses on the history of Haglund's life. The second interview is from 4/30/1991 and is contained on a 60 minute cassette. Both cassettes are in good condition. Haglund discusses his father Carl Haglund who emigrated from Sweden and was involved in Swedish labor politics, his own work experiences, Workers' Hall and the CIO organization.

The collection consists of two interviews that cover topics and recollections spanning 1919-1960s. The narrators are Sally E. Solomon (approximately 75 minutes) and Pearl Barker (85 minutes). Mrs. Solomon was interviewed on February 5, 1991. Sally Solomon was born in Morgan Park and lived there in her youth. Sally’s father, Michael, was a skilled worker at the steel plant. She married in 1954, and she and husband Paul Solomon moved to a nearby neighborhood out of the Park in 1959 to rear their children. Sally worked in the plant’s wire mill for two years and then doing clerical work in the office. Most of her family worked in the plant as did her husband’s family. Her husband worked in structural steel and went to school to become a foreman. Mrs. Barker was interviewed May 1, 1991. She was married for 49 years to a successful physician, and they had three grown children. Their two sons are physicians and their daughter a CPA. The Barkers owned all of the homes they lived in, including one of the largest in Morgan Park on Beverly Street.

The collection consists of one cassette tape of an interview of Saime Monson by Professor Richard H. Hudelson, Ph.D., UMD professor of philosopy. It is a 100 minute tape and is in good condition. The interview is about famiy history and the 1909 Swedish Community in Duluth, Minnesota. Also present at the interview is Mary Edson, Gus Nordin's widow. Gus Nordin (1911-1988), Duluth newspaper editor, was Saime Monson's younger brother. It has not been transcribed.

The collection consists of an interview with civil rights attorney Newton S. Friedman on March 18, 1993. There is no transcript.

The interview was conducted by social worker Elizabeth T. Blue April 24, 1993. There is no transcript of the interview.

This 90 minute history of Carl A. Carlson was taped in January 1972. No one is heard asking questions. Carlson chronicles development and changes in the dairy business in Duluth. There is a partial transcript of the recording.

Professor Richard Hudelson, Ph.D. interviewed Mrs. Klaber on September 19, 25, 1997. The tapes chronicle her life from Germany to the United States, from before throughout and after WWII and her relocation to the United States. There is a partial transcription of the interview.

The collection consists of interviews by Professor Richard Hudelson, Ph. D. of Donald Klaber on July 22, 1999 and March 2000. The focus of the first interview was Donald Klaber's life and coming of age in Europe and Palestine, volunteer military service in the British Army during WWII, his life and choices as a non-religious Jew, life in England, all prior to his arrival in the United States. The second interview covers Mr. Klaber and his WWII military experiences.

Oral history project of Dr. Timothy Roufs interviewing Paul P. Buffalo (1900-6/1977) from March 1967 – 1977. Mr. Buffalo resided at Ball Club, Minnesota, and the Leech Lake Reservation.

This collection contains oral history work from college history courses taught by Professor Mari Trine with a focus on using primary sources and oral history methods in research. Oral history interviews on cassette tapes are listed alphabetically by narrator’s (speaker’s) names. There are transcripts except for the Civil Rights, Women’s History, and African American History courses. A counter/timer index describes topics discussed and where they are on some of the tapes.

The materials comprising this collection are secondary resources Dr. Carlson gathered over time to support her research, including the publication A Childhood in Minnesota : Exploring the Lives of Ojibwe and Immigrant Families, 1880s-1920s . The collection consists of photocopies of relevant resources from state and local archives and photographic reprints of primarily Swedish, Finnish, and Ojibwe families and children. Included are oral history transcripts on life in Cloquet, early 1900s. These selected excerpts of oral history transcripts from the Carlton County Historical Society were completed by students in Mr. Johnson's social studies class in 1975. [Specific note says that nothing is included on 1918 fire.]

In these audiotapes Mr. Slonim discusses growing up, his neighborhood, and recollections of his father, whom he describes as idealistic, generous and impractical. Mr. Edward SLonim compares himself to his father: “I am practical and realistic.” Also mentioned are O. E. Thompson and Dr. Max Hirschfield.

The tape includes information about Dr. and Mrs. Emanuel's education, careers, the founding of the clinic, and the Duluth Symphony. Dr. Emanuel speaks in the third person.

The collection consists of digital recordings of interviews of Erling Jonassen by Stephanie Hemphill conducted in November 2008, focusing on his World War II experiences. In addition to these recordings the collection includes a printed transcript of the interviews (9 pages), a digital copy and printed transcript (3 pages) of a Minnesota Public Radio program by Stephanie Hemphill featuring Erling Jonassen, and digital copies of photographs provided by Mr. Jonassen. Scanned copies of the print transcripts can be found on disc 5.

The collection consists of recordings of oral history interviews conducted by Marian Syrjamaki-Kuchta Dora Kuchta's daughter in law. Edna Syrjamaki, Marian Syrjamaki's mother was present during the interviews. The interviews were conducted on June 27 and July 5, 1980 at Dora Kuchta's home in Two Harbors, Minnesota. Included in the collection are two CD recordings, each approximately one hour in length and 4 photocopied images of photographs of Dora Kuchta and friends.

The collection consists of oral history interviews and research materials on the history of giving birth in Duluth, Minnesota. Oral history materials include sound recordings, transcripts, and photographs, all in digital format. Research materials, in digital format, include a summary article “Birthing Progress: The History of Giving Birth in Duluth”, an annotated bibliography, digital copies of source material for the article, and summary documents covering the contents of the digital files. The introduction to the oral history project, the summary article, and the summary documents are also in print format for reference purposes.

This project recorded the memories and experiences of early employees, board members, and community leaders involved in the establishment and start-up of the Western Lake Superior Sanitary District (WLSSD) in Duluth, Minnesota. Fifteen narrators participated. (A father and son were interviewed together.) Thirteen interviews were recorded in high quality .WAV format and AVCHD video as well as MS Word documents. One narrator declined recording: the interview was transcribed into MS Word document only.
