Research Guide for Visual Journalism - Spring 2020

UMD Archives Sources for JOUR 2300 Visual Journalism

Although the UMD Archives has hard copy archival collections on the history of  Canal Park, due to the library suspending face-to-face services for the rest of the semester I recommend using Minnesota Reflections to find photos and using the sources listed on the main page of librarian Adam Brisk’s research guide for JOUR 2300 Visual Journalism

Please contact me (Aimee Brown) with questions at libarchives@d.umn.edu or 218-726-8526.

I’ll be glad to help by email, phone or zoom.

For everything available online from the UMD Archives (not only on Canal Park) check out this list of digitized materials available online from the UMD Archives and Special Collections.

I recommend the types of searches listed below. You will usually, but not always get better results if you put your search phrase in quotation marks.

Try searching for these phrases:

Canal Park
Aerial Lift Bridge

Try searching by the names of streets in Canal Park during the time you are researching. These may include:

  • Buchanan Street
  • Canal Park Drive
  • Lake Avenue (South, but you may get better search results by first trying “Lake Avenue” and then checking to see if it is in Canal Park)
  • Morse Street
  • Railroad Street
  • St. Croix Avenue
  • Sutphin Street

Below are some examples of results of searches for the names of streets:

Streetcar on Lake Avenue at Morse Street, Duluth, Minnesota.

Samps Hotel, Duluth, Minnesota. This building was the First Avenue Hotel and also the Samps Hotel. It is located at 251 South First Avenue East. The name St. Croix Avenue was changed to South First Avenue East in 1912. Today it is called Canal Park Drive .

Try searching by the names of businesses or buildings. Below are some examples of results of searches for the names of businesses:

Aerial Bridge: Marshall-Wells Hardware Company Duluth.

DeWitt Sietz Company, Duluth, Minnesota
