JOUR 3095 Research Guide: Journalism at the Movies

Find resources and explore research strategies for JOUR 3095.

Specialty and Industry Magazines

Industry magazines, also often called specialty magazines or trade journals, are magazines dedicated to a specific field, industry, or profession. They are written for and by people working in that area, intended to keep audiences informed about new developments or ongoing issues. Industry magazines may also include targeted advertising and industry-specific job notices.

To find specialty and industry magazines through the library, you can conduct a journal search, which is located on the library's homepage beneath the Articles & Books search. The library's journal search allows you to find both online and print journals and magazines.

The interface looks identical to what you'd see in the library's catalog or in Articles & Books, but you can double-check where you're searching in the yellow rectangle next to the search bar at the top of the page.

For JOUR 3095, the following specialty and industry magazines are good places to start:

Scholarly Journals

Scholarly journals publish scholarship and research focused on a particular academic discipline. Many scholarly journals require peer-review, a process in which an article is vetted by other experts in the field before publication. It's worth noting that scholarly journals represent a slice of available information on any given topic, and librarians generally recommend using scholarly (peer-reviewed) articles in combination with popular sources and sources that reflect people's lived experiences. Identifying and exploring journals relevant to your topic can be an extremely effective way to find more information.

To search for specific journals, use the library's journal search (outlined above). For JOUR 3095, the following scholarly journals are good starting places:

Newspapers

Newspapers can be a great place to look for information on films. Articles written at the time of the film's release can provide insight into its historical context and audience reception, and articles reflecting on films from the past can offer analysis of themes, impacts, and legacies. Newspapers also tend to be written with the general public in mind, meaning that they don't rely on you having prior knowledge or experience and use less industry-specific language. Newspaper articles can feel more approachable than scholarly articles, can provide useful background knowledge and context, and can be accessed through library resources.

If you aren't looking for a specific newspaper, the best way to get started is by using the ProQuest News and Newspapers database. This database includes a wide variety of national newspapers like the New York Times. Like other databases, ProQuest News and Newspapers uses keyword searching and Boolean Operators.

If you're interested in a specific newspaper, like the Chicago Tribune, you can utilize the library's newspaper search and search for the title. The newspaper search can be accessed by clicking on the maroon Newspapers button below the Articles & Books search.

If you don't have a specific newspaper in mind, the newspaper search also allows you to search by featured newspapers, either Popular Minnesota Newspapers or Popular National Newspapers. Click on one of the featured newspaper collections to search articles within.

Non-library Resources

While scholarly materials and newspapers will provide useful information, you may want to consult the following non-library resources for additional context and box office information:
