Citing Generative AI

Generative AI

Generative AI tools, or large language models, are tools that generate new text based on existing work. While they are designed to appear as if they are thinking, this is not the case. Instead, generative AI tools predict the text that will answer a prompt. These predictions are often incorrect. When large language models pull information from the internet, they are not able to tell the difference between information that is true and information that is false. In addition, generative AI models pull from sites that may include biased, harmful, or hateful information. If you plan to use AI in your own work, closely review any outputs for accuracy.

UMD's AI Policy

UMD's Teaching and Learning: Generative Artificial Intelligence Tools policy governs student use of AI in academic work. Remember that student use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) as part of course work requires written instructor permission. Without instructor permission, the default will be to treat student use of generative AI for assigned course work as scholastic dishonesty. If you are unsure whether you may use AI for work in a specific course, speak with your instructor.
