Information and resources for university researchers and research partners thinking about doing research, in any discipline, that involves or impacts Tribal nations, Indigenous communities, peoples, or lands.

This policy is intended to inform and assist University of Minnesota researchers and practitioners, including faculty, staff, research scholars, clinicians, postdoctoral researchers, graduate and undergraduate students who are pursuing work with Tribal partners, Tribal communities, Tribal natural resources, and other Tribally-controlled or Tribal-serving institutions, Indigenous Peoples, places, and objects of cultural significance to Indigenous Peoples, wherever those Indigenous peoples, places, and objects may be.

This Guidebook is intended for UMN researchers and practitioners, including faculty, research scholars, clinicians, postdoctoral researchers, graduate and undergraduate students who are pursuing work with Tribal partners, Tribal communities, Tribal natural resources, and other Tribally-controlled or Tribal-serving institutions, Indigenous Peoples, places, and objects of cultural significance.
This is a guide and will not replace thoughtful preparation that considers Indigenous rights, Tribal self-determination, and Tribal sovereignty in all aspects of Indigenous research.

The Office of Native American Affairs works internally to provide University researchers with culturally responsive training to guide research projects, pedagogy, scholarship, and academic initiatives that respect Tribal sovereignty. Our goal is to contribute to a better understanding of Indigenous cultures, histories, and contemporary issues in an attempt to remedy the extractive nature of research and education with Indigenous peoples.
