How do I check on my fines?
Only students, faculty and staff can check their fines through "My Account". Courtesy card users must check their fines at the circulation desk in person, or call 218-726-6120.
Steps for checking on your library fines through "My Account":
1.) Click on "My Account" at the top of the UMD Library homepage.
2.) Log in using your email username and password.
3.) Click on the $ amount listed for "Fines and Fees balance".
4.) You will see a detailed list of your fines. If you click on the number at the far left, you will see details of the item itself.
Paying Fines
The UMD Library charges fines for overdue or lost materials. You may pay your fines at the Circulation desk during hours when the Library is open. Ask to speak with a Circulation supervisor. Fines may be paid with cash, personal or bank check, or with your U Card or debitek card. Credit cards are not accepted, but arrangements may be made for you to make installment payments on your balance due.
Late?
Overdue fines for non-Reserve items are $.50 per day per item, up to a maximum of $20 per item.
The fine for failure to return a "rush" recall item within one week is $1 per day. Keep in mind that anything you check out may be recalled before it is due.
If an item becomes more than 45 days overdue, it will be billed as an unreturned item. The fee for a lost or unreturned item includes replacement cost plus $15 for processing. Payment for a lost item does not clear an overdue fine associated with it.
Items with short-term loan periods will be billed out as lost even before they become 45 days overdue. For example, a final notice will be generated after one week for overdue Reserve items, and a final notice will be generated after 21 days for an overdue item with a one-week loan period.
The fee for processing a check from an account with insufficient funds is $15.
Reserve Fines
Because Reserve materials are assigned for class reading or viewing, overdue fines for Reserve items are quite high--$.50 per hour (24 hours per day), up to a maximum of $20 per item. Please be considerate of other students who may be waiting to use an item that you have checked out.
Academic Holds
Blocked?
If a student or courtesy card user accumulates more than $10 in overdue fines, his or her borrowing privileges at the Library will be blocked. Faculty are not fined for items returned late but may be blocked if Interlibrary Loan items become overdue or if fees for unreturned items exceed $250. If a blocked student's fines exceed $100, the student may have a hold placed on his or her academic record. To reinstate privileges or to have an academic hold released, see a Circulation staff member or call 218-726-6120.
