We recommend...
The UMD Library recommends these search engines for searching the web. These lists are based on what we think are the best search engines available in terms of ease of use and quality of results returned. For good results, get in the habit of using several search engines because no one search engine covers more than a fraction of the web.
For more information about search engines than you'd ever want to know, we recommend Search Engine Showdown.
The best search engines
These search engines search everything on the web - but not our databases - those are separate. (Sometimes, though, you can get to an article in one of our databases through a search engine because the provider recognizes that you are coming in through a UMD connection, and you get our "institutional access.")
- GoogleGoogle is most people's favorite search engine for searching the web, but click on Advanced Search to the right of the search box to get more power in your search.
- BingBing is Microsoft's search engine for the world wide web.
- YahooYahoo has a powerful search engine as well.
- BlekkoBlekko offers advanced search features and spam-free results.
- AskAsk.com is a search engine that is supposed to let you type in a question in ordinary language. It's worth trying.
- YebolYebol is an innovative new search engine.
