Tips for Finding Books

  • Books are useful for reflecting on a subject.
  • Use the table of contents in the front of the book or the index in the back of the book.
  • You don't need to read the whole book!

 

Tips for Finding Books

  • Use the Library Catalog (middle) tab in the search box on the Library homepage.

  • Make sure you're logged in to request books, they will be pulled and held for you at the desk on the Library's first floor.

  • Vary your search terms/keywords and try again.

  • Select "all campuses catalog" from the drop down menu next to the search box - request books from any U of M campus!

  • Find the book on the shelf and browse for other books on your topic.

Browsing for Books

Sometimes you'll want to go up and look at the books that are on the shelves. Browsing can be a good way to formulate a topic idea or to think of other aspects of your topic to explore. Use these call number areas on the Library's 3rd Floor. 

Sociology

is the call number where most materials about the social sciences, including sociology, are located. 

Within H you may want to browse these areas:

HM 1 - 1281 Sociology

  • HM 291 Social deviance.
  • HM 811 - 821 Deviant behavior. 

HQ 12 - 499 Sexual life

  • HQ 71 - 72 Sexual deviations.
  • HQ 74 - 77.95 Bisexuality, homosexuality, lesbianism, transexualism.

HV 1 - 9960 Social pathology. Criminology. 

  • HV 4480 - 4630 Vagabondism. Homelessness. 
  • HV 5800 - 5840 Drug habits.
