Finding Primary Source Materials in the Library Catalog

Here are some tips that will help you narrow your results to primary sources in the UMD Library Catalog:

  • From the library homepage click on the Quicksearch link; in Quicksearch select Advanced Search
  • In the drop-down menu next to the top search box, select subject contains
  • Enter the following terms that describe the material type (OR must be ALL-CAPS):
    • sources OR correspondence OR diaries OR journals OR personal narratives
  • Leave the next search field as ANY
  • In the corresponding search box, enter a key term or terms to identify the topic you're searching
    •  For example, enter terms that describe a major event such as Civil War, Holocaust, etc.
    • Or, enter the name of an individual or group like Lewis and Clark, Abraham Lincoln, etc.
